Fans hail management's decision to chase debtors

By: David Owusu-Mensah

17th April 2008

The courageous decision made by Management to track down people indebted to Kotoko has received a massive backing from the several supporters and sympathizers of the Porcupine Warriors few days after the brave decision was published.

In a random survey last Friday by the Kotoko Express to seek the opinions and concerns about the issue, many the fans hailed it and pledged their support to the men manning the Kotoko chain of command.

Opinions sought from the various supporting groups especially, those in Accra unveiled mixed reactions with virtually each one of them interviewed descending heavily on some popular players indebted to Kotoko.

“It is a step in the right direction for management to come out at the right time to sound a note of caution to recalcitrant players and managers who have been ungrateful to the respect Kotoko had accorded them over the years by reminding them frequently of their debts to the team”.

“The price we have paid for this kind gesture is the irresponsibility they have subjected management of the Great team to”. This was the remarks made by one of the supporters and a well-known Kotoko serial caller on radio sports programmes, E.T. Mensah when this paper sought his opinion.

Similar to the view held by E.T, most of the fans contacted described the move as a worthy one since it came at a period Kotoko would require money to resource the ongoing CAF Confederation Cup campaign as well as the Onetouch Premier League.

A large number of them alike believed the action is long overdue though management has been lenient enough and therefore does not deserve such insolence from the debtors.

“For me, these people have taken us for granted for quite a long while and management ought to exhaust all legal and fair means to recover the money owed Kotoko. In the case of Kofi Abanga, I was shocked to hear after all the noises; Hearts could only afford 3,000 Ghana cedis out of the total amount of 10,000 Ghana cedis” said one Okomfo Kwaadee, a Kotoko supporter from Hot Circle 2.

According to some of these fans, the likes of George Iranio and Baba Armando have been very ungrateful to the club after the hospitality and great deal of respect from the Porcupine family and would have to apologize even before paying the debt.

In addition, many believe that Tofique Alolo’s half-hearted attitude must be stretched to its logical conclusion to ensure players like him never treated Kotoko in such a manner in future transfer deals.

“It is very unfortunate some players who are expected to act as true professionals behave in such an amateurish way and be allowed to go unpunished. They have to face the consequences for the mess they have created not only at Kotoko but to the entire Ghanaian soccer public” were the remarks of Kwabena Ohene Gyan of Circle 16.

It leaves alot to be desired in this modern era for a team like Kotoko to be dishing out money to players without commitment.
I am a Kotoko supporter and these things should be stopped now.
