GHALCA meet 4 clubs on President Cup
Posted: 17th April 2008
The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) on Wednesday held a meeting with officials of four premier clubs namely Hearts of Oak, Ashantigold, Asante Kotoko and Heart of Lions on the organisation of this year’s President Cup to be played on July 1 which is Ghana’s Republic Day.
Hearts of Oak was represented by their Communications Director Albert Commey whereas Walter Yankah and Kofi Manu represented Heart of Lions and Ashantigold respectively.
Asante Kotoko was represented by Director of Operations Jerry Asare, Director Finance and Administration George Amoako and Director of Communications Kwame Baah-Nuakoh.
The battle for President Cup has usually been between Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak. However information available to Kotoko Express suggests that there could be a change this year.
Director of Operations, Jerry Asare, in an interview on the outcome of Wednesday’s meeting said there would be a text poll on which two clubs among the four should play in that prestigious match. “Beginning next week the public will be asked to text on which of the four clubs they will like to see battling for the President’s Cup.
“There have been complaints that the President’s Cup match has always been between Kotoko and Hearts. This time the public will have to decide” said Jerry Asare.
The Director of Operations did not give the short code number's to which the text messages would be sent to but he indicated it would be only MTN and Onetouch numbers.
Jerry Asare also disclosed that the text poll would start next week and end three weeks before July 1. He the two clubs with the highest number of votes would clash for the coveted President Cup.
“We will know the two clubs three weeks before 1st July. The three week period will give the two clubs ample time to prepare” he said.
This latest decision by the organisers of the President Cup match cannot be faulted but given the huge support base of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and Accra Hearts of Oak, it remains to be seen whether followers of the two remaining clubs – Ashantigold and Kpando Heart Lions who are in the minority can vote to put Kotoko and Hearts out of contention.
However one looks at this latest development, it is predictable that Kotoko and Hearts supporters will vote massively for their respective clubs.
That will surely give way to a titanic encounter between the two giant clubs on Republic Day.
