Obeng Darko suspended indefinitely
10th April 2008
Not much has been heard about former Liberty Professionals striker Kwame Obeng Darko since the beginning of the 2007/2008 football season but now he is in the news sadly for the wrong reason.
Information available to Kotoko Express indicates that Obeng Darko alias ‘Baby Rooney’ has been suspended indefinitely following his continuous absence at training.
At time of going to press Director of Operations Jerry Asare who doubles as Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee was in the process of writing to him officially to inform him of his indefinite suspension.
Briefing the Kotoko Express on Wednesday on the decision taken against the player, Chairman Sylvester Asare-Owusu said Kwame Obeng Darko’s attitude towards training and the club in general had been uncomplimentary.
The Chairman said the player had not been training with the club despite having a binding contract. “We sent him a letter to report for training. That was February. It is April now but he had still not showed up” said the hard working chairman.
“Management thinks his behaviour is unacceptable because we paid 300 million (old) cedis for his services. He cannot stay out of the club. We have rules and regulations and Obeng Darko must conform to that”, Sylvester Asare-Owusu continued.
Earlier this year, the striker went on trials in Denmark. However, Kotoko Express’ information suggests that he failed to make the grade there. Another round of trials in Israel after the fruitless search for a club in Denmark also did not yield desired results.
He subsequently headed for Asia and to Thailand but returned to Ghana with no good news.
Chairman Sylvester Asare-Owusu revealed that the striker went to Thailand even without management’s authority something he considered unacceptable and unprofessional.
“He went to Thailand and we did not know about it. There was no permission from us. The issue is that he cannot do what he wants. For that reason we have suspended him indefinitely. We are serious about that” the Kotoko Chairman stressed.
While saying that management was committed to safeguarding the future of every Kotoko player, he pointed out that under no circumstance would management allow any player to take the club for granted adding that every player had a duty to justify management’s investments. He lamented the situation where some players toyed with their contracts and issued a stern warning that management would not tolerate any attitude that had the potential of derailing the progress of the club.
