Supporters gear up for Wikki match
Posted: 1st April 2008
It seems unclear but gradually, the tempo surrounding the return leg of the Kotoko-Wikki Tourist CAF Confederation Cup preliminary fixture is heightening just some few days to what promises to be a gruelling encounter on Sunday.
Though the outcome of the first leg preliminary encounter in Nigeria took centre stage of virtually all football discussions, the tempo died out a bit due to the Easter festivities and particularly after the Black Stars succumbed to Mexico on Wednesday.
This notwithstanding, the anxiety and excitement characterizing the all-important encounter is increasingly gripping every football fan in Ghana.
Obviously, most of these enthused people are fans from the Porcupine fold and the desire to witness Kotoko triumph on Sunday is quite comprehensible, judging from the calibre of players the team boasts of, this season.
As evidence to pledge their unflinching support to the league Leaders, quite a number of these fans have started hoisting flags on vehicles, shops and in front of various houses across the nation.
Several others nowadays prefer to put on Red shirts or attires displaying the bright Kotoko colours of Red, White and Red during daily business transactions and errands, all in an attempt to show solidarity.
Interestingly, it has not only been Kotoko supporters and sympathizers showing signs of enthusiasm ahead of Sunday’s match but the fever has transcend down to the ordinary Ghanaian soccer loving fan on the street.
Some of these football fans, identified as non-Kotoko faithfuls have been spotted by this Reporter on a number of occasions at various news stands in Accra indulging in lengthy discussions and debates on the chances of both Kotoko and Wikki Tourist.
The Ghanaian sporting media which bears the responsibility of setting the news agenda for the public has for the past couple of days shown promising signs of matching up to the duties that the impending game offers, as they hardly pass a day without making news stories on Sunday’s encounter.
Nonetheless, the football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria is expected to add much anxiety and excitement to the game, since Ghanaians cannot afford to lose to the Nigerians for the third time in two weeks, after both their female national team and their Olympic male side beat Ghana to the respective two slots for the Beijing Games.
Kotoko is expected to stop the rot and turn the tide in Ghana’s favor, having already drawn the first leg encounter 2-2 at Bauchi State in Nigeria.
The result gives Kotoko the edge over the Nigerians, as a fair 0-0 or 1-1 result, will see the Porcupine Warriors through to the next stage of the Competition.
