Pull your weight –Bash urges players

 Posted: 6th June 2008

Coach Bashir Hayford has once again maintained that there is no automatic place for any player in the Asante Kotoko team now and that every player sweats and convinces the technical team of his capability before being selected for a match.

Bash maintains that every registered player of Asante Kotoko stands a great chance of being selected provided that player will give the technical team reasons at the training grounds as to why they should be given a jersey.

“They are all Kotoko players, yes every player is registered. But being registered should not be the end but you should train and fight for a position in the team”.

“The fact that some players are always in the team points to only one fact, they are doing what we want and that is winning for us”.

“To get on board, train hard and give us justifiable reasons why you should replace them” Bash told the Kotoko Express.

The coach was reacting to a question as to how come suddenly some unknown players were getting the chance to feature for the league leaders.

In the match against Liberty, the coach paraded about nine players, namely, Isaac Amoako, David Sarkodie, Simon Nii Korley Martey, Obeng Darko, Phillip Owusu, Julius Agyabeng, George Cudjoe and Eric Opoku who are not regulars in the current Kotoko set up.

Against RTU in Tamale, Obeng Darko and Sam Arthur were also put on the team though it was only Obeng who got his first league place for the season.

What might have contributed to that could be attributed to suspension to some players, injuries as well as some players on national assignment.

But Bash disagrees with that fact alone and explains that should any player convince all that he can do what others are doing, that player will be given the opportunity.

The coach recounted how some players made it into the first team and later dropped depending on their performance, as a testimony to his principle that only the best is good enough to put on the Kotoko jersey.

Coach Bash finally threw a challenge to every Kotoko player who is not a regular to improve on his performance at training and convince the technical team to give him a place in the team.

“Places are won in my team on merit and so I will urge my players to meet my challenge and make it into the team,” he said.
